With the 21st pick in the 2015 NBA draft the Dallas Mavericks select Jerian Grant, Gaurd, Notre Dame.
The_NGUYENNER:
After eliminating Trey Lyles and Kevon Looney in lieu of a more glaring need in point guard, I thought longggggggggggggg and hard between Jerian Grant and a stunner in George de Paula. In the end, the 6'5" 200 lbs. Senior from Notre Dame edges out in front for a number of reasons.
Shooting:
After the trainwreck that was the Rajon Rondo experiment, Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks may be hesitant to take on another PG who cannot shoot. The simple fact that Grant can play off ball to Monta Ellis was very appealing for me. (Don’t let the percentages fool you, this kid can shoot the tar out of the ball). Or at least much more respectable than Rondo/de Paula would be. With how important floor spacing has become, giving the Mavs players more room to operate will help restore what was shaping up to become a historical offense before Rondo came to town.
Defense:
Although not quite the defender as a motivated Rondo, he is in another league than J.J. Barea and Ray Felton. Standing at 6’5″ with the athleticism to stay in front of guards, Grant possesses all the tools he needs to succeed on the defensive side of the ball — he just needs to consistently bring the effort. Using his 6’7.5″ wingspan and good anticipation, Grant can generate turnovers for a team that ranked dead last in turnover differential. Especially if he takes care of the ball, which leads me to…
Experience:
Another big determining factor in the pic is the experience that Grant has. Coming out of school as a seasoned senior, Grant has been stewing in college fine tuning his game for four years. He has played in big moments, and most importantly, thrived in them . It’s easy to see Grant coming in and making an immediate impact on a team that is propping up the window of opportunity with frail veterans. Although coming into the league at 22, I think Grant has enough talent and upside left to draft over de Paula. This was the tipping point in my decision because I believe Jerian Grant is both the better option for the present, and the sturdier bridge for the future.
