There have been a handful of well-written articles over the last few months on Michael Porter Jr.’s back injury, the microdiscectomy surgeries that he underwent in 2017 and 2018, and the expected recovery of a professional athlete with those surgeries under their belt. Last week, Dr. Brian Sutterer took to his YouTube page to provide a nice, easy to follow analysis of what his injury means and what signs there might be that he can make a full recovery and have a healthy NBA career.
According to his YouTube bio, Dr. Sutterer is a resident physician at the Mayo Clinic. In his spare time, he makes videos about high-profile sports injuries and to “explain them in a way the casual fan can understand and learn from.” I’d say he achieved that goal in this video. In short, there is reason to be optimistic that Porter Jr. can make a full recovery and have a healthy career but his recovery is far from a certainty.
