It is with heavy hearts that we found out today Dikembe Mutombo has passed away. According to reports around the situation, it is due to brain cancer. First and foremost, my and the entire Denver Stiffs staff’s thoughts go out to the friends and family of Dikembe Mutombo. He was a great man and humanitarian. May he rest in peace.
Dikembe Mutombo is also a very important figure in the history of the Denver Nuggets. He was a stalwart in the 1990s and played with the Nuggets from 1991 until 1996. In that time he was a three time All-Star, and set the franchise record for blocks – a record that still stands to this day.
He has a very successful NBA career and was a great player, but I’d like to mainly focus on his humanitarian efforts. He came from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in 1997 founded the Dikembe Mutombo foundation. Its goal was to improve the living conditions in the Congo, and was a great charity.
He also won the NBA’s Citizenship award twice – an award that celebrates someone who’s done great work off the court. He will be remembered as a basketball player, but also as a caring person. A great father, a great humanitarian, a great friend, great husband, and an all around great person.
Rest In Peace Dikembe Mutombo, 1966-2024.
