J.R. Smith and the Nuggets have agreed on a contract that is reportedly a three year deal.
I have been trumpeting the benefits of a three year deal for both sides. From the Nuggets perspective they lock J.R. up for the rest of his formative years. If he regresses and goes back to being a knucklehead, he is not on the books for five or six years. On the other hand, they do not need to shell out an eight or ten million dollar deal when they are trying to cut costs.
From J.R. Smith’s perspective he gets some financial security while preserving the chance ot cash in after three years if he continues to develop into a dynamic scorer and all around impact player.
I will post more once we hear the actual financial details, but I imagine the deal is for somewhere in the neighborhood of the MLE give or take a million bucks.
