According to reports from both Adrian Wojnarowski and Shams Charania, Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray has agreed to terms with the team on a 4 year, 209 million dollar extension. This brings the Jamal Murray extension saga to a close. There was a lot of speculation over the offseason whether he would or would not get extended. After Shams reported back in June that they were close on a deal – nothing materialized for quite a long time.

Coming off of a poor Olympics performance, post-season run, and facing questions about his health – some speculated that talks had stalled. That there may not be an extension this offseason. Obviously, this was not the case though. The Nuggets have resigned their franchise point guard to a maximum extension that will keep him under contract until 2029. It is in line with what the Nuggets have done in the past, rewarding guys who have been with the franchise – and Murray qualifies for that more than anyone outside of Nikola Jokic.

After a summer of talking about keeping flexibility open, this puts the Nuggets in a position to where they are staring down the barrel of the second apron. If they extend Aaron Gordon, who is extension eligible, as well – they will likely be well into the second apron. This leaves the fan base in a state of waiting to see whether ownership and the front office will commit to the core four, or if they’ll let Aaron Gordon go the way of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Either way, today is a day to celebrate for Nuggets fans. Jamal Murray is very important to what they do, and will remain so for at least the next 5 years now.
