The 2010 Denver Nuggets were all kinds of fun.
For starters, they won 53 games and the Northwest division title. They had star power in Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups. They had some solid role players Arron Afflalo, Chris Andersen, and Nene. And they also had J.R. Smith and Kenyon Martin. The latter two, were involved in one of the all-time best pranks-gone-bad when J.R. convinced one of the ball boys to fill Kenyon’s car with popcorn.
Kenyon wasn’t known to have a calm temperament (or a sense of humor) so ruining the man’s car interior wasn’t the best idea for a prank. But this is J.R. Smith we’re talking about.
Kenyon went on Dan Le Batard’s show, Highly Questionable, and explained the details of what went on that night and oh boy! This story never gets old.
If you haven’t heard it before, the audio of Kenyon when he learned of the prank is worth a listen. It also comes with one of my all-time favorite quotes, when Kenyon said that he would “lay hands on whoever did it.” Almost sounds biblical.
Kenyon was so outraged at the incident that he even threatened to sit out of the upcoming playoff series until the team ratted out the culprit. ESPN’s Chris Broussard wrote the behind the scenes piece shortly after news came out about it.
Long live the Melo-era Nuggets!
