According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, Blake Griffin has elected to opt out of the last year of his 5-year contract with the Los Angeles Clippers to enter into free agency. Griffin has played his entire career for the Clippers after being drafted as the 1st pick overall in 2009.
Ranking 4th in the Western Conference standings this year, the Clippers went on to lose to the Utah Jazz in the first round of the playoffs. As if that wasn’t disappointing enough, the Clippers’ roster now appears to be wasting away with both Griffin and Chris Paul on the free agency market this season.
After acquiring so many power forwards last night you’d think the Nuggets would be set for a while, but Griffin would actually be a perfect fit alongside Kenneth Faried, Darrell Arthur, Trey Lyles, Tyler Lydon, and Juancho Hernangomez in the Nuggets’ “all power forwards” lineup.
But, in all seriousness the Nuggets could really use a defensive minded power forward like Griffin. They should have picked one last night, but if Connelly can finagle a way to capture Griffin all offenses would be forgiven, and it may just look like there was a plan after all.
The only problem (apart from the forwards collection the Nuggets have started) is that Griffin is the arch nemesis of Faried, and the two together on the same team could be like combining gasoline with fire. However, the Nuggets have discussed moving Faried before, and there is no time like the present to finally trim the roster and capitalize on a superstar to bring fans back to the Pepsi Center.
