Congrats to associate head coach Wes Unseld Jr., who appears to be (finally) getting the opportunity he deserves!
According to Shams Charania of The Atheltic, Denver Nuggets associate head coach Wes Unseld Jr. has emerged as the leader to become the next head coach of the Washington Wizards.
This is both good news and bad news from a Nuggets perspective. On one hand, it’s nice to see Unseld recognized for all the incredible things he accomplished with the Nuggets. On the other hand, it’s tough to lose a coach that meant so much to Denver. Unseld has been the Nuggets “defensive coordinator” the last few seasons and has been with the team since 2015.
Prior to coaching with the Nuggets, Unseld had coaching stops with the Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors, and most notably the Wizards from 2005-11. Unseld began as a personal scout with the Wizards under his father Wes Unseld, who was Washington’s general manager at the time. Unseld has since become a jack of all trades coach as he possesses the ability to not just coach defense, but coach effective offense as well like he did at his first coaching stop in Washington.
When Unseld is ultimately hired, the Nuggets will now have an open spot on their coaching staff. No matter who they hire, that person has some pretty big shoes to fill. Congrats to Coach Unseld, we wish you nothing but the best in Washington!
